Whether you started with smooth purées or baby-led weaning, finger foods give your baby a chance to explore new tastes and textures for themselves. Once your baby is ready for solids, soft foods they can pick up bring a whole new kind of discovery to mealtimes.
Handling food helps little hands practise gripping and coordination. Your baby can feel its shape, texture and weight before they even take a bite.
Why finger foods matter
Self-feeding is about more than learning to eat independently. Giving your baby time to explore food can support:
- Variety: Trying different foods and textures helps your baby become familiar with them.
- Coordination: Picking food up and bringing it to their mouth gives them practice using their hands and eyes together.
- Appetite awareness: Eating at their own pace gives your baby room to respond to their hunger and fullness cues.
- Confidence: Each new food and self-feeding skill brings a sense of achievement.
- Family mealtimes: Sharing suitable parts of a family meal lets your baby join in and learn by watching you.
- Simpler meal prep: When your baby can share suitable family foods, there may be less need to prepare separate meals.

Tips for easier gripping
Mess and dropped food are part of learning to self-feed. Slippery foods such as avocado, pear and peach can be especially tricky for small hands. Try these simple ways to make food easier to hold:
- Use a crinkle cutter. The ridges add texture to soft pieces of fruit or vegetables.
- Add a light coating. Ground flaxseed, desiccated coconut or fine breadcrumbs can give slippery food a little more grip when suitable for your baby.
- Leave a little skin as a handle. On suitable soft fruit and vegetables, a small piece of skin at the base can give your baby something to hold.
- Use the stem as a handle. Offer soft, cooked broccoli or cauliflower florets so your baby can hold the stem.
- Try a banana “lollipop”. Peel just the top few centimetres, leaving the rest of the peel as a handle.
Every baby develops at their own pace. Whether you offer spoon-fed meals, finger foods or a mix of both, keep mealtimes relaxed and allow your baby time to explore. Always seat and supervise your baby while they eat, and prepare food in a texture and size they can manage.
