Why the right fit matters

A child restraint can be suitable for your child and still be difficult to use in a particular vehicle. Measure more than the advertised width

Product width is useful, but it is only the starting point. Look at the shape of the shell, the position of side-impact features, the rearward-facing depth and how the restraint sits against the vehicle seat. Door trims, wheel arches, seat contours and fixed head restraints can all influence the available space.

Measure the narrowest usable part of the vehicle seat rather than the widest point of the cabin. If the restraint will sit beside another seat, check where their widest points meet. Two products with similar listed widths may interact very differently once installed.

Choose features that make daily use easier

Test the complete set-up

Where possible, test the restraint in the vehicle before finalising your choice or ask a qualified child-restraint fitter to assess the proposed position. Check that the installation follows both the restraint manual and vehicle manual, that the top tether can be routed and connected correctly, and that the front seats can still be used safely.
